Paint your Wood Furniture in 4 Easy Steps
1
Prepare the Surface
-
Use a gentle grease remover to clean any grime, followed by a fresh water rinse to ensure the surface is free of remnants of the cleaner. Use a damp sponge for a final wipe down and let everything dry thoroughly.
-
After cleaning and ensuring the piece is 100% dry, sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper (100- to 150-grit). Sand enough to give the primer some grip but not so much as to remove the existing finish entirely. Wipe away any dust with a slightly damp cloth and let dry.
-
Repair any cracks, joints, or nail holes with a wood-patching compound. After the compound has thoroughly dried, sand it down to make it even with the surrounding wood.
2
Prime the Surface
Use Fresh Start High-Hiding All-Purpose Primer. It offers maximum hide, seals and suppresses stains, and provides a mildew-resistant coating for wood and other surfaces.
3
Consider Sheen
Sheen is an important consideration in addition to color. A lower sheen helps camouflage minor imperfections and gives a vintage flavor, while a high-gloss finish offers a sleek, modern look. Benjamin Moore’s semi-gloss provides multiple sheen options, including satin and semi-gloss, which are ideal for furniture.
